The catch: an ETF that is really a CFD
On its fees page eToro says that, due to product restrictions, some non-leveraged ETF buy positions are executed as CFDs. Such a position is marked "CFD" in the trade window.
Why it matters:
- With a CFD you do not own a share of the fund but a contract with eToro on the price difference.
- Such a position pays the CFD spread (the gap between the buy and sell price); leveraged positions also pay an overnight fee.
- Brokers themselves state that most retail accounts lose money on CFDs.
What to do: before confirming a purchase, check whether the trade window says "CFD". For long-term investing you want a real share of the fund.
Currency
Without a euro account at eToro, every euro deposit is exchanged into dollars. With one, the exchange costs 0.75% each time you buy an asset in another currency or move money between the accounts. For euro ETFs (for example VWCE on Xetra) bought from a euro account there is no exchange.
Recurring Investment does not pay an exchange fee on the deposit it triggers.
How to choose a broker
Compare three things: whether you get a real share of the fund, what each purchase costs including the exchange at your monthly amount, and what it costs to leave. Compare: Trading 212, Interactive Brokers, Revolut.
